Oscar Wilde would no doubt have fit right in today. Witty, successful - a great celebrity of his time. If he had been alive today he would have been a star, I am sure of that. But towards the end on the 19th century a person like Wilde was instead imprisoned for years due to a homosexual relationship. He died at the turn of the century, but lives on today through his plays that are still performed more than one hundred years later.
The most famous is the comedy The Importance of Being Earnest from 1895. It is a play revolving around two friends who each maintain fictious identities to avoid many of the social obligations from relatives. It is about love, relationships and misunderstandings.
At less than 60 pages, it is a very quick read. And even though it was written a long time ago it is still very witty and frankly, very funny. I loved the dialog and the characters have great personalities. I would actually want to meet them in person. I can only recommend the play. It is the perfect book for a a few hours of spare time - preferable with a glass of wine at your side.
